Time Travel on the Island of Vir

The Kaštelina Fortress is one of the most distinctive landmarks on the island of Vir and a fascinating place for history enthusiasts and explorers. Located right by the sea, this small stone castle tells the story of a turbulent past.

Built in the 17th century by the Republic of Venice, Kaštelina once served to protect the island’s inhabitants from Ottoman attacks. The strategic location offered then, as it does now, a breathtaking view over the coast and the turquoise sea – today, it’s a perfect spot for vacation photos and romantic sunsets.

Although only parts of the complex remain, you can still feel the whisper of bygone times as you walk through the old walls. Information boards on site provide insights into the history and significance of the fortress.

A short detour to Kaštelina is worthwhile – especially in the evening hours when the ruins are bathed in warm light and the sea softly murmurs in the background.
