The smallest cathedral in the world
The Church of Sveti Križ in Nin is considered the smallest cathedral in the world – and is also a true jewel of pre-Romanesque architecture. Built in the 9th century, it is only about 8 meters long, but of great historical significance.
Despite its modest size, the church impresses with its unique construction: The walls are up to 57 cm thick, and the arrangement of the windows is designed to make symbolic shapes appear on the floor at certain times when sunlight enters – a testament to the impressive knowledge of the builders of that time.
In the past, Sveti Križ served not only as a place of worship but also as a calendar and sundial. Today, it is one of the most famous landmarks of Nin and a popular photo subject.
Surrounded by remnants of a Roman settlement and nestled in the quiet backdrop of the old town, the church exudes a very special atmosphere – quiet, spiritual, and full of history.
